Can someone tell me what this is?

Snake_Charmer Jun 25, 2003 12:23 PM

I found this pic on a website, but unfortunatly only the scientific name was listed, 'Agkistrodon Howardgloydi'. I have had no reply from the site owner. I am not well versed in venomous species, can somone tell me what this snake's common name is and where it comes from? Looks kind of like an orange copperhead. Maybe I can find a bit more about them if I have that info. Thanks!

It's a Costa Rican cantil or castellana. I only know because Hank Molt has some for sale and I almost died of jealously when I saw the pictures.

Here's a pic of a HowardSpraguei, which is only found in a small rural town in NC.

looks like a baby cottonmouth to me. see the line on his face?

They're close relatives, but I think the cantils have more lines on their faces than cottonmouths do.

The Cottonmouth has a stripe running through his eye like the cantil does but the difference is the lower jaw and underside of his head are all white up to the bottom part of the top jaw. The Cantil just has white stripes and the white does not run under the head.
