How long to rest females between breedings...?

ginevive Sep 01, 2004 12:36 PM

I was wondering how long you other rat breeders let a female rat rest between breedings. Meaning, after the pups are weaned (or fed to snakes, hehe) but before you put the male in with her. I do not want to overstress my female breeders. So far, I have usually given each female a few weeks or so off after weaning. is this enough?

2.1 Ball pythons: Goblin, Nothing, and Bela
1.0 Boa Constrictor Imperator: Apache
0.1 albino Cranwell's horned frog: Bene
1.0 Tiger salamander: Slasher
1.0 black kittycat, Inky
A bunch of Oscar cichlids, one giant pleco, huge breeding lot of "fancy" (read: deformed) goldfish, and me an' the boyfriend.

If they are in good shape and haven't raised a huge litter I think it is enough. Some folks leave groups together all the time and get litters as they come, without breaks. I think some of it is care and diet and some is genetics so it is hard to say what will work for you and your rats without seeing them. I would tweak it to suit myself.
