Update on young sav..

monitorman315 Sep 01, 2004 04:16 PM

Firstly i'd like to thank everyone who offered advice yesterday as i tried to describe what was going on with one of my young savannahs.

Ok, here's the deal. Went to the vet this morning and gave away a 141.00 for her to tell me she had never seen this before but believes it could be a stage of Dermatitis but wasn't sure but went ahead and prescribed a topical antibiotic creme anyways just in case and wants me to bring it back next week so she can charge me another 100.00 to tell me if the creme is working. I also brought in a fecal sample in case its something internal thats the cause.

So now its just a waiting game ladies and gents, i'll keep ya posted.

Hmmm, OK. "Dermatitis" is not a very specific diagnosis -- it simply means 'something wrong with skin', and is only one step more specific than the famous veterinary diagnosis of 'ADR'*. Did the vet take a culture, or have a look at a skin scraping under a microscope? If not, you might need a better vet....

Is the antibiotic an antibacterial, or an antifungal compound, or both? I am still betting on fungus.

* ADR = "ain't doin' right"

hahahahaha! Your right not very specific! I got really frutrated with her and started to ask her what garage sale she got her license from but i restrained myself. She did take a culture but since they didnt have an in house lab i'll find out in 2 days what their findings are. I also made another appointment with my old veternarian who relocated to Philadelphia, I knew i should of taken that 25 minute drive but was lazy and tried to find something closer. Oh well.

Oh, and to answer your question it is an antifungal creme not anti bacterial sorry

Well gotta go tend to me sick animal!

PS This is what can happen when you purchase animal over the net with out knowing the animals or companies background.

Not just the price to possibly fix your monitor. After you learn about this stuff, you can prevent it or fix it yourself.

Make sure you ask her what caused it, what kinda of pathogen.

The reason I did not respond below was, you were already told to see a vet. Thats all I would have said.

Funny part is, I have never had skin problems of any kind, with our monitors, even thou we do not use UV bulbs. Got me, again I must be lucky. FR

Hi monitorman,
Forget the vet - you can tell if it is working or not. Is there any swelling in the toes, feet or ankles? Sometimes ticks/tick bites can cause swelling there, and causethe shedding of the skin to come off abnormally...

I wil lemail Mike Balsai directly. Maybe he has looked at this malady since both he and I had discussed it years ago?

skip the vet visit - use your eyes and see for yourself if it improves....

good luck!

Hi Mark,

I hadn't planned on taking it back to that particular vet either way! I haven't noticed any swelling/blisters or anything that would stand out. It pretty much just looks like its shedding its skin except theres no skin/scales underneath the skin thats falling off.

Anything you can find out will be helpful.

Thanks and cheers
