hey,
I am just wondering if snappers become docile if they're kept as a pet. I got babies and id like them to stay as nice as they are now.
thanks,

It has happened before, but I wouldn't count on it. Just plan on them being aggressive. I had a 12 incher that would let me pick it up from the sides if I came on it from behind. He would usually just keep his mouth open. If something moved by his front legs though, he'd snap at it. I would never consider any adult snapper tame though. The "tameness" could just be them waiting for you to slip up then "bye bye finger!" At least an agressive turtle is predictable.
Long term captive snappers usually become tamed down versions of their wild counterparts. With alot of handling, they will become somewhat calm. My 9 year old female is very calm, but if she gets mad she lets me know. She has never snapped at me, out of water that is. In the water, all snappers react the same...take out anything that moves, including your fingers.
These things are Satan's pets...Don't ever trust it or ever give it even the slightest chance on biting you...Because it WILL...Trust me I know I got snapped by a big one last year and thanks to a disposable lighter it finally let go. But after a couple of operations my finger is finally better! So the moral of the story is don't EVER give it a chance to bite you IT WILL!
