He was obviously frightened......if this was his first time outside, it's a perfectly normal reaction for him to be scared. Even if he's been out before, something must have scared him like a shadow or something moving.....he wanted to get away and hide I'm sure.

Howdy!

I have an adult male dragon who has also been the sweetest little fellow but recently threw a fit such as you mentioned on two occasions. The first was exactly as mentioned in another post, a bird flew over while we were basking in the front yard. Basically he got scared. Irwin (the beardie in question) got really defensive and would not allow me to pick him up, he was really freaked! I got bit twice trying to get him back in the house. The second occurance I believe to be a result of the first. Irwin saw that I was starled by his demonic display of aggression and now thinks he can just act up whenever he does not want to do something such as return to his cage. I found that a firm "NO" along with covering his head settled him down at least enough to get him back in his cage, then he was fine. Sounds to me like for whatever reason your little one was also scared of something? Take it for what it's worth and try not to show fear as you may end up with a beardie such as Irwin trying to buffalo you into thinking he is a big tough guy! Aint they great! Smart little buggers they are

He most likely saw a bird fly over head. My male did the same thing when a bird flew over head. He flattened out his body, and opened his mouth really wide, black beard and all. Running around in circles. Funny after the fact. Scarey as hell during

a distinction, and we live by an airport!) flies overhead, I cover my beardie up with my hands as much as I can and hold on if I'm outside walking around with her.

She loves to lay flat on my hand and relax when I walk around outside, but she really gets agitated if she sees ANYTHING move overhead.

Hopefully that's all it was...sorry about your thumb.
