Some Questions

MadSpazz Sep 01, 2004 09:39 PM

I plan on getting a hatchling corn pretty soon and I have some questions. If I went to a place like LLL Reptile and I buy a hatchling, will they be able to tell me what gender it is, or if they can't is PETCO a bad place to buy one? Also, what kind of backgrounds do people use? And lastly, is it okay to hot glue some of those fake strands of leaves to some of that sandblasted grapevine? Thanks in advanced.

I'm really unsure of what LLL reptile is. Almost any type of retail pet store that you walk into can tell you the sex of the snake...they will know from the breeder. Most likely. I havent ever purchased antyhing from petco (but thats also cuz there isnt one within 100 miles lol) but i've heard lots of people say not to, and i've heard lots of people who say they have some corns and such they bought from petco that they've had for years. I don't even have a background on my cage, but what I'm actually getting ready to do is get some 1/4" cork and hot glue it to the back of the cage so the snake can have something to go up againsst and get some fake plants to punch thru the cork and hot glue to the back but no it wont hurt for the snakes to come into hot glue...once its cooled. I have some 1/2" dowels in my tank and I just looped the artifical plant around it and took some thin 26 gauge wire and tied it to itself then put a bead of hot glue under it on the dowel and that works very well.

post pix if you get some! would love to see your snakes!

If you can wait and get one at a reptile show. I've been to LLL Reptile, they have 2 stores in California, and they were rude. Their animals were in small enclosures, esp the monitor lizards. I didn't like them at all.

As far as Petco...I bought my first corn from Petco and she is doing great. Alot of folks don't like Petco either. Don't pay attention to anything Petco people say. Most of the time its not good advice and they don't know what they are talking about.

Read all you can before you buy your corn. That way you will know what your getting into and how to care for your new addition. Honestly reptile shows are the place to go to buy reptiles. You can talk to alot of people, different breeders, check out alot of different snakes, reptiles, creepy things. They are so much fun to go to.

I just have those pretty backgrounds you can get at Petsmart or any reptile/fish store. I don't like looking at the wall.

Just my thought on the matter...

Why not just buy a hatchling from one of the good breeders who frequent and support this very forum???

You'll save money, get a better quality animal, have some real experience from which to draw in times of necessity, and you can know that you are supporting those who truly support the hobby. When you buy from the breeders, it is truly a win-win situation.

Although there are several good breeders out there, I personally would recommend Don Soderberg, or Kathy Love. Both of these breeders are excellant, and they will each give you all the help you could ever need.

I'd recommend myself too, but I'm not breeding anything for a few years!
