eating eggs

xturtlepowerx Sep 01, 2004 10:23 PM

I have a semi large group of box turtles, i have noticed that year after year, at least half of my eggs are eaten, usually by the males. Does anyone seperate the gravid females? or just sweat it out...

Can you tell us a little more about your setup? Are the females digging nests and then the males digging up the eggs and eating them, or, are the females laying eggs on the surface?
If the females are laying on the surface, they may not be finding nesting sites that meets their needs, and so are jettisoning eggs.
How large is your set up? Do you have plants growing in it? Places to hide? Sunny and shady sections?
With a few adjustments you may be able to correct the problem.

In an 8 by 8 pen I have found a female that excavated a nest that was dug that morning and consumed the eggs that were laid in the nest.
