Got two Burmese. One is in an 8' Neodesha cage, the other is in a large walk-in enclosure -- 4' wide, 12' long, 8' tall. The snake in the large enclosure has been in there for almost a year. I've been using cypress mulch as a substrate with no problems. But lately, the mulch I've been getting has been wet. All the stores keep it outside, and it's been raining quite a bit lately. I have been reluctant to put the snake on the wet mulch for fear of causing health problems. Am I correct in not using the wet mulch or does it really matter? Does anyone have any other substrate suggestions for such a large cage?

The mulch being wet may or may not cause problems, but the risk of what may be growing in the mulch may one you might not want to take. I use newspaper. Its cheap and cleans up easy. It would take a fair amount to cover your large cage, but get a subscription to the sunday edition of the largest newpaper in your area, and that should just about do it.

besides newspaper? I have used newspaper in this enclosure before, but I'm not too keen on it. I'd like to use something else. I'm also falling out of love with the mulch. Anything else a good option?

I have used bark before, but for big snakes, its a bit expensive and seems to be a high risk for mites. I wasnt too keen on newspaper before, but not I wouldnt use anything else.

Is there a particular reason you dont want to use it?
