Any suggestions on what to feed a newly hatched L. Pyro?

jkins Sep 02, 2004 02:05 PM

Hello, I just hatched out some L.Pyros yesterday and am curiuos to see what others have tried to get them to eat pinkies. I know they can be difficult and sometimes will only eat lizards, I just want to hear some opinions or methods that have work for others who have had experience with these guys. Thanks,
Josh

if they reject these, then defrosted pinks in a deli cup or small container with the snake for a few hours or overnight. If rejected then live pinks then live pinks in a cup, then defrosted pinks scented with the right kind of lizard (some sort of Fence Lizard or Spiny Lizard--genus Sceloporus, or if you live in the West, Tree Lizards, genus Urosaurus, or Side-Blotched Lizards, genus Uta) then an actual lizard of correct size (pretty small).

By the way, wait for the hatchling snakes to shed their first post-hatch skin before offering food.

Anyway, keep trying, maybe once a week, especially the lizards if you reach that point, but don't start with lizards because pyros like lizards and you'll only have to get them off lizards and onto mice if you offer lizards first. Lizards lizards lizards--how many times can I use "lizards" in one scentence?

I've hatched out a lot of pyros, and most of them eat defrosted pinks no worries, but there are occasionally those who are elected by the others to pay me back for all I've done to wildlife over the years.....and they're good at it.

I would agree with the previous post...persistance is the key. The only thing I would add is when defrosting the pinks use HOT water just not boiling water. Another option not mentioned is the braining of the various forms of pinks offered will also trigger a response. Once these guys start feeding they are awesome snakes!
