Law Change?

JethrozMom Jun 25, 2003 01:40 PM

Hi guys...

I wasn't entirely sure where to post this, but I heard through the grapevine that a new law was passed, making it illegal to own or sell ANY reptiles in denton county. Is this the case? I don't want to move, but i WONT give up my herps just because someone who doesnt have my best interests in mind wants me to.

Do any of you guys know anything about this?

Thanks,
Jamie

The following is a direct cut and paste of the City of Denton's Code:

Prohibited animal means any species of animals whose sale, display, or possession within the city limits is unlawful. The following or similar species of animals, including their hybrids, shall be considered prohibited:
(1) Class Reptilia. Family Helodermatidea (the venomous lizards); family Viperidae (rattlesnakes, pit vipers and true vipers); family Elapidae (coral snakes, cobras and mambas); family Colubridae--Dispholidus typuss (boomsland), Cyclagras gigas (water cobra) and Bioga dendrophila (mangrove snake) only; order Phidia (racers, boas, water snakes and pythons); order Crocodilia (crocodiles, alligators, caimans and gavials);

This is the only thing I was able to find stating anything about reptiles. This pertains only to Denton City Limits however, I was unable to find anything related to Denton County itself.

Here is the website that lists the online codes for a lot of cities in Texas:

http://livepublish.municode.com/LivePublish/statelist2.asp?state=43

Remember to look in definitions as well as prohibitions. Sometimes, reptiles are listed as wild animals, domesticated or not.

Also keep in mind that if any "new" laws are passed they may not be updated quickly in the online codes. In order to find out if there are any new laws, you'd need to contact your local animal control.
