How to mount flexwat?

tredding Sep 02, 2004 02:58 PM

I am building a wood enclosure for my corn snakes. I want to build in flexwat
. How should I go about mounting it? can I just place it under the wood floor of the cage or do I make a recess with a false bottom of plexi so the heat tape does not come in contact with wood. or do i place it on the inside floor and cover with some sort of material?
Thanks for any suggestions

What I have done to my wood cages is that I put the flexwatt on the floor with shower stall plastic over the top of it. Make sure you paint the cage and let it dry. You can get the shower stall plastic at any home improvement store and it comes in 4x8 sheets and is only 11.00 per sheet. It is the thin stuff with no wood attached and make sure it is not the smelly stuff. (you will find out what that means when you go there) Put the flexwatt down and drill a hole in the side/floor corner and run the cord out. Cut the plastic about 1/8-1/4 smaller then the cage(it expands a little when heated) Run it for a little bit then take some clauk and seal around the edges. Works good for me and the plastic is easy to clean. You could even use the rest of the plastic to coat the whole inside of the cage.

How does the plastic hold up over time? I have 10 panels and didn't use them because I didn't know how. My cage is almost done but I will build a third level and could use the flexwatt there.

They hold up good. If you ever had a problem with the flexwatt just peel the silicone off and fix the problem. The plastic is easy to clean and holds up to the abuse the snake's wastes can do. I put newspaper over some and aspen on the other.
