What are the best feeder roaches?

vulcan Sep 02, 2004 03:46 PM

I've heard that roaches are more nutritious than crickets and was wondering which are the best? I've read various sites that sell hissers, lobsters, orange heads, orange spotteds, death heads, and CA woods. What are the pros and cons of these roaches or does it even matter?
Are roaches a better food source than earthworms, silkworms, or butter worms? Thanks for the info.

P.S. This may be a dumb question, but do roaches have to be dusted? Thanks again.

I do not keep monitors, but have used roaches for my frilled dragons and my geckos. Hissers and lobster will breed the fastest, but dealing with there climbing can be a pain. I would stick with the non-climbers. I breed all the species you mentioned and they all work great. The orange heads and orange spotteds are the best breeders. The death heads will get larger if your looking to feed larger animals. I feed my roaches a good blend of food with protien, calcium, and vitamens. They also get a good amount of fruits and veggies. I dust my roaches just like I would anything else.

Lobsters are excellent breeders, and small, yet hissers are big but slower growing and reproducing. Bigger animal, bigger roaches.
