Tomato Frogs, I need some advice please

WEZ Sep 02, 2004 04:02 PM

Hello,

I have 1.1 tomato frogs, I've had them for 8 days.
I set them up in a 38 gallon long reptarium complete with bottom cage liner, a combination of jungle mix/orchid bark/sphagnum moss for substrate, they have a nice sized easily accessible water bowl, and a misting system to keep the humidity up a bit (I live in an area with very little humididy. They have plenty of hiding places, a lot of terrarium vines, etc. caves, thw works. If I was a frog I'd want to live in there...

I cannot get them to eat, and I am getting very worried. They have been offered zoophobas, crickets, pinky mice, an lobster roaches...they turn thier noses up at everything. The male even "wipes" a cricket off of his face if it lands on him!

I know it isn't my water, I have a well, so my water has no additives whatsoever. Even so, I am letting water sit for 24 hours before using it in the bowl or misting system.

What in the heck am I doing wrong here?

Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

Be more patient. The frogs will calm down more as they become more familiar with thier new surroundings. Your movements and the noise you make when you go to feed them is frightening them. Be very slow and cautious when you approach the tank. They soon will learn that its feeding time when you open the enclosure.

I forgot to mention..I am not supplying any supplemental lighting (UV or spot lights) or heat, I've been told not to, and they are at about 75F. There are about 20 crickets in the enclosure with them, and I can't leave zoophobas in there they just bury themselves. The only time I unzip the enclosure is to give fresh water and re-fill the misting machine.

Do they have a "favorite food?"?

I suggest that you remove all food items and try in about a week. Crickets running loose in the enclosure can strees the frogs not to mention that they can also bite the frogs. Healthy tomato frogs can go off feed for 2 months with no problem.
