A couple balls I produced this year (1st post)

Paul Edwards Sep 02, 2004 06:25 PM

Hi,
just thought I'd share a couple pics (in 2 posts I guess) of a couple of Balls I hatched out this year. This albino was one of five that hatched out of 8 eggs. All are possible het for Paradox as their father is a Paradox albino that is in my collection. I have one more clutch of 5 hatching later this month.
Thanks for looking,
Paul Edwards

Dang that has to be sooooo much fun. I can't wait to get into the Ball morphs.

"Het for paradox" ... I didn't know the genetics of Paradox albino were understood yet. I certainly didn't know that it was a recessive trait. Have you proved this out yet?

I think the "possible" part is to cover paradox not being proven out yet for ball pythons. It will be interesting to see what is going on with them.

"possible"

To me when a person says possible means they could be genetic. One step more....It means the original morph is proven genetic. The paradox as its name means unexplainable.....till they are proven I will not say or agree to the word possible with the word paradox...... Agree?

They are indeed "possible" hets. It's not proven, so they are termed "possible" hets. That's what possible means, that they have the possibility of being heterozygous. Is this hard ?

But the industry STANDARD has evolved so that when a person makes animals that are POSSIBLY heterozygous for a PROVEN trait, they are deemed POSSIBLE HETS (whether 50%, 66%, whatever).

When you take an animal that is NOT PROVEN genetic, the Ball industry does NOT call them possible hets. They would call them "unproven" Yes you are technically and literally right, but the industry standard for naming them would say you are wrong. And I'm pretty sure you know this.

If the paradox is proven to be genetic should we still call it a paradox? Or a different name?

Finnagin,
No it's not a proven trait, yet. Will it be ? Who knows. I surely don't. That's why I put "possible" in there, so there is no confusion. I have another clutch that will be hatching later this month, 5 eggs, hopefully with more females as the 1st clutch was 3.2 and 3 male hets. We'll keep all of these & breed them back to the father, who is the Paradox, and try to prove it genetic. There is only one other boid that I am aware of that is proven to be Paradox and that is the Kenyan Sand boa. In the meantime, I really like having a bunch of albinos around, they are one of the most different from the wild type morphs there is. I'm looking forward to raising them. Wish me luck !

I guess I can see the other's point and "unproven het" would probably have been better than "possible het". Knowing that the father was a paradox I understood that "possible het" meant that it was unproven (other wise they would be 100% hets) but just by them selves it would be less confusing to call them something like “albino unproven het for paradox”.

BallBoutique Sep 03, 2004 10:51 AM

that was my point Randy.....I love the paradox....only a few out there.
