Cable Can U Help Me Out?Live in San Antonio,Tx

MXCN Sep 02, 2004 07:16 PM

Hello 2 all! I have recently purchased a male roundtail horned lizard. I've been keepin' herps for abot 15years now & i work in a pet shop here in San Antonio, Tx. 1st question is i've been ordering my ants from ants alive & the 1st time i ordered all 496 ants were dead the remaining 4 i fed to Toad my baby!My 2nd order & 3rd i had to get shipped overnite & it costed me 17.50 per 500 ants, soi i want to find a closer source for them that way i'm not waiting 3 days & a moon to get them & they're not all dead.69 Is there any where else that i can order & my 2nd question is if anyone from San Antonio know where to find a harvester ant nest. I really want to start a colony & really need a queen. I've done some herp hunting since i've been here in Janurary & a few times when i lift a nice sized rock over there are all these big red ants everywhere, but now that it's summer it seems that the've all disappeared. Are these big red ants under rocks harvester ants? And finally my last question, I recently went to a website & they had a roundtail horned lizard for sale.Well i emailed the NORTH FLORIDA ZOOLOGICAL? Have you guys heard of them ? well i e-mailed him &he said that he had sold it so he would talk to the guy he gets them from in Tx! So if there's N E 1 in Tx who knows where to get a female roundtail horned lizard e-mail me @ tankboy42069@yahoo.com.

Thanx,
Ray

Hey Reptoman,
I can wait until reptoman sends me some, he's been eatin 1/4 in. crickets, also he's kinda funny cuz he doesn't eat anything but mealworms. He'll eat harvester ants,Fire Ants, Carpenter Ants,1/4 in. Crickets,& those big red ants u find when u lift a pretty nice sized rock over, but no mealworms of any size. But i greatly appreciate the offer.I just moved here this past Feb. Cuz my mom got transferred. I like it so far & my job is pretty cool. So, do you know of any places around here where there are harvester ant colonies?i would really like a queen that way i don't have to buy ants as regularly.I don't mind the drive. So do u know of ne1 who knows where to catch a round-tail horned lizard? Believe me i've looked in more places than 1 tryin to find "Toad" (my male RTHL) a mate & w/ no success. My dad's frien owns a 100 acre ranch in Junction & to my luck nada!I tried to order 1 through Florida Zoological, but they want $25.00. A guy that lives around San Antonio is gonna get 1 & Florida Zoological is gonna have him bring it to me. Which isn't bad, but like i said i've had no luck so i'll just have to give in.
i also have 4 sandfish, 1 RTHL, 1 Western Hog Nose Snake That stays pretty grumpy, & 2 Veiled Chameleons. I work @ Alamo Aquatics on the Reptiles Side.Been there?
Thanx for the replies !
Peace!

Hey man,

If you read far enough down the forum, there is a guy who found a nice Roundtail in Texas somewhere. Don't quote me on this but I think the post was sometime between May-June. Anyway, It'll have an "image" marker on it, so that should help your search. Have you tried looking in the morning while cruising along dirt roads? I live in DHL land, and until I searched in this fashion, my actual findings of the HLs were meager, at best. I've found 5 this year, a significant jump. I've also found two Coast Horned Lizards in this way. So maybe try your luck that way.If you try, let me know how it turns out.
Good luck.

Hey Crotaphytuskidd,
Thanx for the input. But seriously how small do you think Tx is? No ofense intended. I've searched the forums & haven't found it. Do u have a link?

Hey MXCN
I din't mean to imply that the second biggest state in the union was small. Sorry for the indiscretion. I was thinking since Roundtails only live in the Western half of Texas, finding them might be simpler than it truly is. From the map in my Stebbins, it looks like you'd have to drive a ways to find them anyway. Again, my apologies. BTW,
Here's that post I was talking about. Maybe that will help. Good luck.

Found in the road on Hwy 90 near Comstock. Going to keep him a couple weeks and see if he eats well. Luckily I have a red ant circle nearby to harvest. I know that Texas HL are protected, but Round Tailed are not, correct?
