What should i do? Snake getting under the carpet

svt-sinister Sep 02, 2004 10:11 PM

Ok i have a 20 gallon long tank with an UTH on the bottom. The kind that sticks. I have some carpet on top first and then have aspen. During the past 2 weeks my king keeps on going under the carpet and onto the HOT glass. How do i stop this? What do you guys do?

I personally have no way that I know of to stop this..BUT you can get some velcro, stick it to the bottom of the carpet and glass to form a border so the snake can not get under it..

Most kings love to burry themselves in the aspen.. do you have a lot of hides in the tank? If not he could be using that as a hide spot...

First of all, the glass shouldn't be hot enough for you to worry about. If it is, you need to get some sort of rheostat or lamp dimmer to cool down the UTH.

The reason it is burrowing down there is that you don't have a more secure place for it to hide. Make a hide box that is only slightly larger than the snake with a small entrance just a little bigger that the snake and it should move into that instead.

It could also be that it is seeking the warmth because the cage is too cool. Check your temps.

Weight the edges of the carpet down with heavy deco, hides etc.

Get the UTH on a dimmer or rheostat. I had one at one time that would get too hot and I was afraid the snake would get burned, so I put a dimmer on it. Worked like a champ!

Now I have a rack system with the same dimmer hooked up to flex-watt heat tape!

I've had some over the counter heat pads that reached 140 degrees. But then some of the same brand only reach 95. Dimmers are the way to go.
(for the record I have never had a snake burned by a heatpad, even before I was smart enough to check the temps. But STILL probably not a good thing.)
