Help 1what is the best way to culture springtails?

ahphule Jun 25, 2003 02:19 PM

Every culture I start either fails immediately or become infected with little red mites and then fails. How are people sucessfully culturing springtails longterm.

TIA

Go to edsflymeatinc.com and they tell how to raise them. They also sell all the supplies for it. I just setup a large rubbermaid with them. I used to use peat moss as a substrate, but it gets stinky and I had a problem with gnats.

We use a rubbermain shoebox with hardwood charcoal. We feed them cous-cous & fish food & they flourish. One thing we did find out is not to use tap water when you set them up. I couldn't figure why they were dying...and that was the problem. So now I only use distilled when I set them up.

I've only been culturing them for a few months, but i've not had any of the difficulties people have posted about. Got my first culturing kit and culture from Eds Flymeat. A rubbermaid shoebox filled with hardwood charcol. I used RO water and the brewers yeast and wam! they're swarming. None climb the sides, they like to hide down inside the 1/2 inch of water beneath or in the charcol. Sure they could venture up the sides but they don't seem to like to do that. Just follow the culture instructions as Eds Flymeat provides. If they have everything they need, why would they roam. Now, if someone comes up with how to keep the ff from climbing side of everything and escaping, that would be extreemly helpful!
