Pacman hasn't eaten in 5 weeks...yet is still truckin'

needaurita Sep 03, 2004 12:59 AM

Ok so let me start this story off by saying that yes I did feed my pac a adult mouse. If you are gonna criticise my feeding habits and not help me out, please find another topic to reply to (my fingers are crossed that EdK can offer some of his ideas).

It was the first time I had fed an adult mouse to my frog, and he took it greedily enough. However as the title states he has not eaten in 5 weeks as of Friday. He stays buried 3 inches in the substrate and doesn't appear hungry at all. He is much larger than he was before I fed him the mouse, but I have noticed that he hasn't passed the mouse yet (I could have missed the droppings, but I doubt it). Is it just cause it takes him a while to digest the mouse, it is after all a pretty big meal. He looks fine, can hop around and all that if I check on him, he just isn't eating.

Tank is heated around 75-82, humidity about 70-80%.

Thanks for any constructive suggestions.

Just give him time. That is not at all uncommon. He will come back up to defecate and feed, so just hold out. As long as he looks good, alert, and is not losing weight, there is nothing to worry about. One of my baby horned frogs did not eat for his first few months in my care. It can be troubling, but just leave him be. He will come around. good luck.

My adult horned frog goes through periods over a month without eating. She'll bury herself in the coconut fiber, and emerge monthly, which is when I feed her. I admit, sometimes it is tempting to un-dig the frog and make sure she's OK. But as long as I keep the tank moist enough, and at the right temps, that's all I can do but wait it out.
When she undigs herself, it's usually because she has defecated and feels the need to move to a cleaner spot in the tank. If I catch her out, I'll toss in a few nightcrawlers on a plate and she'll eat and then re-bury. I love such low-maintenance pets.
I would worry, though, if you are not sure that the frog has defecated or not. If he has, and you have not noticed it, it could become a breeding ground for bacteria. I like having a plain coconut fiber tank with no frills, so I can easily see any droppings.

how did u feed the pacman a mouse?? do ya just throw it in or waht? i've always wondered how to do it

If you plan on feeding mice, feed frozen thawed unless feeding only pinkies. Older mice can fight back and blind/injure your frog. Almost any reputable person that keeps snakes will tell you the same thing. Use tongs to hold the mouse in front of the frog.

Yeah, a live mouse or rat can have a lot of fight in it. I have gotten bitten by a mouse before, and it hurt like crazy. I'd imagine the mouse could do a number on the frog's mouth and inside its throat in a last ditch effort to save itself frrom being eaten.
