Tortoise ramming

damkbm Sep 03, 2004 09:15 AM

I know probably a dumb question, but Do all tortoises do the ramming thing you is this a male characteristic.. I have a sulcatta which was sold to me as a male but I thought it looked like a girl when I got it, but now it's ramming my large male and trying to flip it... Thanks

Normally, Female Sulcatas are not that agressive. I've seen it with Greeks and other tortoises where the female will flip another but not so much so in Sulcatas.

Males, on the other hand, can be very agressive. Sulcatas usually don't show a distinctive morphological difference until they are 12 to 14 inches SCL. They can sometimes be tough to sex.

Thanks your always so helpful..My sulcatta is about 11 inches, so can I assume this is a young male ? MY new little greek will ram anyother tortoise it sees....

It's not a guarentee that it is a male but in the case of a Sulcata, it increases the odds that it is a male.

With the Testudo (Hermans, Marginateds, Greeks...) all bets are off. Females actually seem to ram more than males. (go figure)

(you're welcome)
