taking fecals to a vet...

louiec Sep 03, 2004 09:45 AM

ok... I work a 9-5 job... and travel about an hour each day to go to work..

so for me... getting a fresh Fecal sample to a vet is tough...

I have a few questions:
1) whats the best way to preserve the fecal till I can get it to a vet (and how long can I keep it this way b4 I get it to a vet )
2) can I take it to any vet (even if they dont normally do bearides?) just to get results?
3) or should I just take it straight to the closest "bearide" vet?

see the thing is the closest vet that handles exotic animals is in the city (Manhattan, NYC) so it take me about a half an hour just to get there... plus since its a NYC vet.. their prices arent the cheapest... so i am trying to figure out the best way to do this (cost wise) but without cutting my beardies health short...

what would be best if I can take a fresh sample of their fecal... preserve it somehow... and take it asap to a vet... knowing that I will get the same results as if the vet was getting it shortly after the beardie did his thing...

ok sorry for the long post... any suggestions...

You can put a fresh poop in a baggie in the fridge. I believe you can keep it for up to 24 hours this way.

Any vet clinic should be able to perform a fecal exam.

Is this a new animal, a routine check up, or do you have a reason to suspect parasites?

Best,
Michele

they are not new...

just check up/suspection...

I recently started trying some new stuff in their diet that I havent normally used (All ok stuff)... and their stool seems a lil runny... hope its just the change in diet or something...
btw: they only eat greens... and pellets...

What I would do is collect the fecal the night before in a ziploc and then put it in the fridge and in the morning I would put the ziploc in another bag and then put that ziploc in a lunchpail with a blue ice or frozen ice pak. That should keep the sample fresh for the vet. And yes I would go to a reptile vet b/c if something were to come up the vet would know whether to treat or not and what dosages to give. Always remember if you treat make sure to use a Probiotic especially if you use Albon.

Where in NY do you live? Im in Whitestone and I my mom picked up a flyer of a vet that just re-opened about 3 blocks from me and on the packet it had a pic of a beardie so I was like hey thats cool , If all goes well I wont have to travel far, I can walk there :D But yeah if you know of a reptile vet they'd know what to do if they were sick but im sure a regular vet could find out for you.Just my 2cents

Joey
