i need help....life or death situation....

lucyleo Jun 25, 2003 02:30 PM

I took a time out to visit canada(family loss). but before i left i decided to leave my leo in a local trusting pet store. now all was fine till i came back to pick her up. on the drive home i noticed my leos eyes were shut. i kindoff thought she was asleep, but she kept moving. then i saw that this has not ceased. i called the owner and he said that they gave her to much appetite plus. i truly think that is the cause of this. and that night she had mucus stuff comming out of her eyes. my brother told me to go to this forum because he trusts it. im so sad i cried. but now the day later her eyes are still shut and now she cant see her food. what shoud i do. shes walking around without sight. PLEASE HELP.

if you need to e-mail me please do email my brothers im using his screen name. its proskaterron@cs.com

How long did the pet store have your leo? Has she ate since you have recieved her back? Why were they giving s/he appetie plus for? Are you sure its that, or did they cage s/he with another animal that might have been sick. In all cases it might be best to take it to the vet just to make sure!

GOOD LUCK!

well i left it for 2 weeks. they keep her alone in a 10 gallon. when i came back they told me her tail was getting thin, soo they gave her the appetite plus. every time i called they told me she was fine. and there arent any vet by here that will treat reptiles. are there any drops to give her. right now im feeding her can o'crickets and with a syrenge. but her eyes are still shut with mucus. i will not touch her eyes because i do not want to hurt her. her eyes are so sensitive. i feel so sad seeing her in pain

Where is the closest vet? I live in a small town (not sure if you do also) but you need to find one. An hours drive is better than a sick and dying leo! You might try bug slurry. Depending on the size of your gecko, get your juiciest crickets a few mealies the gut loaded ones (try to get the soft ones also (Ones that had just sheded)), the vitamins you feed her, calcium with some ensure (its a protein drink for humans can get it at most stores), and mix a it all together (but just a little of the ensure) and feed it to her so you know she is getting all the vitamins-minerals-calcium that she need till you can get her to a vet.

Eye infections can be fatal in leos. My first leo died of an eye infection, I didn't know much about leos then and the store kept telling me it was normal. It wasn't, and by the time I took her in it was too late, even though she got treatment, she died anyway.. So it is important to treat these things as promptly as possible. She wouldn't have mucous around her eyes like that unless she was infected. She needs to see a vet. If you refuse to spend the money or have some other reason/excuse why you feel you cannot take her to a vet, you can try ordering an antibacterial eye ointment online, here (copy URL into Browser, you want the Terramycin):

But you really should take her to a vet, today, if you care about her life, the pain she is in, and her well-being.

well i got an appointment for 9 o clock tommorrow. the closest place is about a hour or two away. how long is to long for the infection. the owner of the vet store told me, shes had it for about three or 5 days. im feeding her vitamin dust for reptiles mixed in water in a syringe and can o crickets.... i may add i have not tried this but is gut load for crickets okay? im so worried. shes my first reptile i ever purchased shes about a year old now. i picked her out when she was a hatchlings. shes my favorite of all my leos and all my herps. i love as if she was part of me. well please responde if possible.

You can use chicken flavored baby food as a food source until she sees a vet, and probably even for a while after that until her eyes clear up. Mix a little bit of the baby food with a few drops of water, and stir is a little of whatever you dust your crickets with. Zap it is the microwave for 3 or 4 seconds if it has been refrigerated. Just make sure it is not too hot, and then syringe feed her until she refuses to eat any more.

I'm glad to hear you got an appointment, a vet will be able to diagnose her and give her whatever medications she needs.

What is your geckos weight, length and age? Is her tail fat? If he tail is fat it is really not essential that she eats right now, but you do need to keep her hydrated. You can get some ensure at the supermarket and feed her that by putting it on the end of her nose to lick off. Don't feed her mealworm gut load. But you can feed her mealworms by pinching the heads off and squeezing the guts out on her nose for her to lick off. Is she eating the can-o-crix?

You can also soak a sterile cotton pad with warm water (boil first to sterilize, and let cool a bit) and place it gently over her eyes, holding there a few minutes, to try to soften up and possibly remove some of that dried mucous. This should not hurt her and may feel soothing. You can do this as often as she will tolerate it. If she seems stressed out by it and wriggles a lot to get free, it is probably best to just let her stay undisturbed in her hide in a dark quiet room, as stress lowers the immune system.

Take a piece of tissue with warm water and GENTLY wipe around her eyes...if you can get some Vetropolycin it may help (Vetropolycin is a slightly medicated ointment commonly used on bigger creatures with slight eye infections). Good luck!!!

Sounds like an eye infection. If your eyes were all pus-y and you couldn't see, you'd go to the hospital, right? Your leo needs medical attention. Take her to the vet.
