RF eating pothos plant--OK??

gavigan Sep 03, 2004 11:44 AM

We just moved our redfoot to a larger enclosure. He has two large plants in there--a ficus and a pothos plant (both recommended by various tortoise websites and books). He doesn't seem interested in the ficus at all, except to hide in it--but the pothos is being pruned on a daily basis! He doesn't eat much of it--seems to prefer decapitating branches--but he does munch the leaves once in awhile. I'm pretty sure it's okay, but I do notice that the plant has dyed his beak a dark, dark brown...is that okay? Can I leave the pothos in, or should I replace it with another ficus/something fake? He does seem to love having the plants...thanks!

I had a redfoot who ate pothos down to the roots & was none the worse for wear. It was in his pen for weeks before he discovered it was eatable. I had 3 pots of pothos & would rotate them out but removed them all together when he started biting the leaves off without eating them.

Rotating sounds like a good idea, although he's already progressed to the "decapitate for the fun of it" stage. I may start looking into a second ficus or a fake plant--although the pothos still has a ways to go before it's doomed...thanks for letting me know!
