Snake Hater ignorance

EricWI Sep 03, 2004 03:59 PM

Here is a paragraph I found within the Pittsburgh Tribune revealing how ignorant some people still are about snakes.

"It saddens me to hear that there are many exotic animal such as an alligator in a home. Most animal owners are irresponsible and negligent about taking care of dogs and cats, but alligators and snakes frighten me. Being irresponsible and negligent with those kinds of animals is dangerous to themselves and to neighbors, such as the boa constrictor that was let loose near the Kennedy School area. Are these people insane or what? This isn't a fishing worm you are contending with. This is a ruthless killer. It's like letting a serial killer loose to roam around and find its next victim. All pet stores should be banned from selling these dangerous animals to individuals. They belong in zoos only."

Someone needs a reality check! Most people's dogs, cats, and even hamsters are more dangerous to the public than my snakes.

While it is true that recently I told a friend (more on them in a bit) that I'd much rather attempt to take on a 12' alligator than a 12' reticulated python, I am more afraid of an angry dog or cat.

It's interesting how articles like this can go from stating something which is true, then take it to extremes. In this case, that little nugget of truth is the line stating "Being irresponsible and negligent with those kinds of animals is dangerous to themselves" and the owner (not so much with the neighbors, though. That's were the ignorance begins). At the time that I made my comment about rather trying to defend myself against a gator than a retic, I had just gotten done attempting to convince this person not to buy a baby alligator. Their motivations for wanting one were that they are "cute", "make good guards", "you can ride them", and my personal favorite "take it to school in your backpack." I tried to explain just why this is a bad idea, pointing out that these animals need warmth year-round (we live in Missouri, it gets rather cold, I somehow doubt her parents would be willing to construct a large pool in the basement, etc) and will become a heavy burden food-wise, along with the obvious safety concern for her, her family, and dogs once it grew up. Last I knew she is still planning to buy a hatchling. These kind of actions are what give large reptiles a bad reputation, making it hard for people to obtain some very rewarding pets and are prepared to properly care for them.

Sorry if this post falls under someone's definition of a thread hijack. I kinda needed to vent and this seemed like a constructive place to do it.

That's what I tried to tell her, but to no avail.

If you have the chance don’t hesitate to send a rebuttal. I found this link on the forum awhile back and it may be useful (http://www.anapsid.org/pdv-boid.html) for rebuttal info and facts on the actual danger of large snakes to humans. What they should do is have a boa day at the school with some large boas present to show how harmless these animals are to humans. And finally for a little irony . . . I bought one of my largest boas (almost 9 feet) from a grade school! Now isn't that a laugh.

Ruthless killer? No.

If one thinks about it the house cat is one of the most "sadistic" animals on the planet-minus humans. It'll play with a prey item long before it's dead.

a zoo or behind bars...

makes me remember a conversation between Army General Tommy Franks and a female news reported about gun control.
Tommy mentioned that he believes fully in training troops and young adults in responsible gun use/ownership.

Her response was, aren't you equipting them to be killers?

His response - and you are equipt to be a prostitute, does that mean you are or must be?

She shut her mouth after that.

If that comment was from someone who worked at the paper, he doesn't deserve to write in a public forum and have his ideas and ignorant views exposed like this.

My $.02
