problems with a rack.

Ram Sep 03, 2004 08:51 PM

Hello, I built a rack following these instructions, click or copy paste for info on the rack. http://www.arbreptiles.com/cages/rack.shtml . It's a great rack and it works great. Problem is, I want a rack with bigger shoeboxes so I could keep bigger herps in it. I want to keep young ball pythons in it. Does anyone know of any shoeboxes that are bigger and will fit into this rack? The heattape I use is 3". Oh, and I use one really long strip of 3" flexwatt and snaked it through each level so each bin has the proper belly heat. Will the heattape be big enough for young ball pythons? At what age should I move them to a bigger rack if the heattape is no longer wide enough for them? Are there any snakes out there that can live their whole life on 3" heattape? Such as colubrids, pythons, or boids? Thanks.

check rubbermaid.com, sterilite.com, and reptiletubs.com. Also, what do you mean by you "snaked the heat tape"? did you bend it? if so i have heard that doing that ruins the heat tape.

Do you mean tubs with the exact same height but more floor area? I doubt it. If you did not glue in your shelves you can go ahead and readjust your shelves.

Unless your room is quite cold that should be fine.

>>At what age should I move them to a bigger rack if the heattape is no longer wide enough for them?

When they outgrow the boxes.

Most any snake will do fine on 3" heat tape if ambient temperatures are sufficient.

I didn't bend it, well, I didn't put a kink in it. I got enough so when I snake it through, I don't have to bend it too much. I want a box that is the same height and length of these boxes, but much wider, so each level holds one or two bigger boxes rather than the 5 it holds now.

Also, the heattape is sandwiched between the shoebox and melamime, should there be any space in there? There is a little space since the box doesn't rest on the melamime since it was little knobs on the corners that keeps it slightly off the melamime.
