Another Rat Snake

Elaphefan Sep 03, 2004 10:00 PM

This is a picture of the new addition to my collection of American Rat Snakes. This little guy is an orange morph Texan that just emerged from his egg at the end of last month. He and his siblings are still residing with Terry P. until he develops good eating habits. I can't wait to see him in person. Terry sells great snakes.

With the addition of this little guy, I will have five of the seven subspecies of Elaphe (Pantherophis)obsoleta. I have Black, Yellow, Grey, and Everglades in my collection now, and this Texan will give me an obsoleta from the western side of the Big Muddy.

I didn't know how the babies would feed with this being my first Texas rat snake breeding. Almost all the Texas babies ate a thawed/frozen pinkie on the first try. Isn't proof that they will eat and develop, but it's a good start signal. They didn't even move up slowly and check the pnkie out for a few moments. They went right after it.

You have a nice collection of obsoleta Rick. The obsoleta group covers a big range and has quite a few subspecies.

Nice looking little snake. Its always nice to see someone who appreciates the Elaphe the way Mother Nature intended them. Dont get me wrong, I have a great appreciation for all the different morphs out there, but my heart will always lie with the normal Elaphe Obsoleta!!! I only have 3 of the 7 sub-species, but will continue in my quest to get them eventually!

Great start on the Elaphe and good luck!!

Thanks all for the photos. I just love the natural colors. Here is one more obsoleta, one of my Grays. He is a 03 male. Note that he has brown saddles and not the classic black. I have both types, but I find that this coloring just seems to catch my eye. He is very calm and just a great snake. As you can see from the photo, he is going to shed soon, but he still looks great.

Brian - You need a snake from the Western portion of their range. I love the Deckerts. I miss the trio I had. Great looking everglades. Thanks for sharing a pic.

Nice pattern. Looks like a white oak phase gray rat snake. Great looking gray rat snake. What's this a calm gray rat snake? LOL.

Hey Terry,

What can I say, he must love me. I have a pair of Black Rats that are also very calm. Now I'm wondering if I put the cage of my Trans-Pecos Rat Snake next to his, would the Trans-Pecos learn something and get with the program? The only reason I have any skin on my hand is that the Trans-Pecos is an 04 and can't get her teeth in me.

Take care.

Rick
