Found a couple ringnecks

Justin Stricklin Sep 04, 2004 01:47 PM

I went to my grandpas and found 2 ringnecks. one was about a yearling and the other is around 15" give or take a lil. It is the biggest I have ever found. I will get the correct measurment soon, but want it to settle in and eat first. Sorry no pics. Go to the conda forum to find out why if you desire to. It is a reply to a subject line reading why not or something like that. Now I need to find me a few salies and make a slurry for them for scenting pinkies. My little ones that hatched just slowly died. I have one baby left and it is going to die soon most likely. It sadens me but I cannot do anyhting for it. They nevr took to frogs and would not eat worms and had no sallies small enough, actually none at all. I am pretty much going to mess with the big ones only now because of this.

Nice finds. What could really could really help you is one of two things: either keeping a pet salamander or finding some DOR salamanders. If you keep a pet salamander, you have a year round scenting specimen. Next time it really gets to be salamander season, you can try looking on some major roads through appropriate habitat. If any were crossing and got hit by cars, stick some in the freezer. Then you can defrost, scent, and refreeze. They will fall apart at some point, but that just means they will be better for scenting. Good luck.

Yea, any salmander I see I get. Dead or alive. I am going later on today to my grnadpas (finaly got a car...sort of) where I got them to look for sallies. I wish tiger were common. I have never found a tiger in my area. The only real common ones would be slimy manders and mud (they are toxic so I will avoid them). There is another small species but you have to look hard. If I see any tigers at a show or something I will get it and keep it. I might see if I can get the guy at the pet store to order me one or a water dawg or soething like that. I liek tiger anyways. I can care for the bigger ones better than the smaller ones that is for sure. I have tried many smaller ones but I have had no success over the last 3 years so I am going to take a break from them and I will stick to the pythons and waters and kings.

Most snakes that have evolved to feed on amphibs have also evolved mechanisms of dealing with the poisons. So, you should be safe offering them "toxic" salamanders as long as they are also from the ringnecks' place of origin.

I will still avoid it if I can. I already figured it would do no harm but I do not take many chances. I am sure I can get a few slimies and cut there tails off and use them for scenting. I just gotta figure out what to feed the yealring I found. I think it would eat small frogs because there are tons of cricket frogs about 50' from where I found it.
