Frosted Ghost question....

dmac77 Sep 04, 2004 02:55 PM

My girlfriend just picked up a female frosted ghost corn at the raleigh show today. The corn has an almost totally blank belly with only one or two dark squares on it at all. One of the clutch mates to this female was also a frosted ghost, and her belly was totally patternless. My question is this.... does the patternless belly indicate motley or striped pattern? What about if the belly is 99%patternless with only one or two dark splotches? I was curious because the back pattern on my girlfriend's snake definitely looks motley and it has a stripe that runs about 3/4's of the way down its body on both sides of the back pattern... Any info would be appreciated. I'll post pics as soon as I can get some... Thanks.

Sometimes the term "frosted" means hybridization with a grey ratsnake, but other people will also use the term to mean that the saddles have a lot of white on them, even if the cornsnake is pure.

Again, I'd say it depends on the snake, if it is a hybrid or a pure corn. If it's pure corn, a checkerless belly does signify motley or striped (it also can signify milksnake phase influence or bloodred influence as well). Sometimes, or so I've heard, a motley cornsnake may have a few belly checkers, but this is supposedly a very rare thing. If the snake is a hybrid with a grey ratsnake, I'm not sure what the belly would look like, as I don't have experience with these kinds of snakes.

Yep, after checking on the website of the company my girlfriend got her snake from, it turns out that the frosted gene they have is derived from hybridization with Grey rats. So... that might be where the belly anomalies are coming from. Still, despite being a hybrid, it is a great looking snake. I have a two-year old ghost corn that I'm looking forward to breeding her to. Might make for some interesting babies.
