can you tell age by size?

RedQuake Jun 25, 2003 03:47 PM

I was watching my crested gecko Zeek today and was struck by curiosity....
Is there a way to tell the approximate age of a gecko by its size? (total length from nose to tail) My crested is exactly 4 inches from nose to the end of his tail. Is that how i'm supposed to measure or just to the base of the tail?

and......At what age do breeders usually start selling their hatchlings?

Thanks
Red

You can only really give an estimate, because depending on the diet and how well the animal was taking care of size can vary. I would say your guy is anywhere from 3-4 months. I personally sell babies no younger then 2 months, this way they are well started.

Thankyou Mike I was able to measure Zeek on a fluke.....he just happened to be walking along the front glass and i was using my ruler at the time I've set him up in a critter keeper, and he seems to be OK, but the largest one i could find was still not that tall. So i'm going out to look for another brand which has much taller ones. I love the top to his cage, a small door right in the middle. that way he can't jump out while i'm cleaning or feeding

I think i'm going to insert a small door like that in the screen top of my 25 gal while its not in use

Thanks again Mike
