Was looking at some hatchlings at a local pet store today...

Despite the fact that this store gets its babies in at around 2 weeks...(argggg) they are still the "best" place to purchase bearded dragons...and other herps--they actually take good care of them...except today..

Today they had a tank with about 8 hatchlings--around 5-6 inches. They were normals and looked very healthy and alert--and adorable. The problem I noticed was that they were offering a dish of greens an apples--the greens were cut into pieces about 2-3 inches square and the apples were in quarter sized chunks about 1/2 inch thick!!!

I couldn't help but as the store supervisor (the manager would have known better) if he would be willing to chop up the vegetables/fruit into smaller pieces so the little guys could eat! (They do offer them appropriate sized crickets daily too.) I was surprized when he immediately took the dish out and came back with a better sized meal for the babies--they dove into it!

Its bad enough to sell fragile babies--I've seen them sell babies less than a week old--BUT to not offer them food they can actually eat...well at least they were on paper towels!

I know what you mean. I see baby beardeds all the time at a local pet shop that I go to, to get supplies and such. The babies all look to be right out of the egg practically. They usually have crickets that are WAY TO BIG for them. I actually went in yesterday, and there was one baby left (last time I went there were like 5, I hope they went to good homes, and didn't die), and there was a huge cricket on it's head. The cricket was almost bigger than his head. I talked to the manager, and he said those were the smallest crickets they had. They are a petstore, why can't they get 1/4" crickets or even smaller for the babies if they are going to sell them that young. I really can't help but think the others may have perished due to the fact their food is too large for them. It makes me mad. I also mentioned to an associate there one time that there was a baby bd that was stuck between the glass and the cage carpeting on the bottom. She said, "Ok, thanks", then went back to talking to one of the other associates about something else. I doubt she or someone else tried to help the baby. I wouldn't go there accept for the fact sometimes I need emergency crickets, or some other type of supply, they are the only petstore that is really that close to me, and even they aren't that close!
