basking spot question

drzrider Sep 04, 2004 09:21 PM

I got my PE heat gun today and checked the temps in my new cage. The cool side was in the low 80s. The place where the light shines on the basking spot shows in the 150s. The actual spotlights I am using are 2 feet from the shelf. The temperature around the shelf used for basking is in the 90s. This seems good. My question is if the basking spot can burn the monitors back, feet, or belly? The shelf is a polyurethane coated 2x6.

There are water dragons, chameleons, and monitors in my jungle room.

Hi Ed,

Your temps appear fine and won't cause your animal any damage do to burns. Although i have noticed from observing my animals that their feet seem to be very sensitive to high temps when basking. My salvator for instance use to raise and hold its feet in the air while basking in the hottest spot of its basking area, which is 142 degrees.

Cheers
