What would be a good material for floors in in a high humidity enclosure...

monitorman315 Sep 05, 2004 03:03 AM

that comes in 4'x8' pieces? I'm in the process of putting together my 4'wide x 5' tall x 8' long salvator enclosure and was going to use white shiny (white) particle board for the floor as i did for the walls & ceiling but am now having second thoughts. Any advice and oppinions will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Fiberglass Reinforced Panel is about $28 for a 4'x8' sheet and is very durable. I have seen it used in off-exhibit holding cages at zoos for both Komodo and Crocodile Monitors.

It's very popular over on the monitor forum.

Chris...where does one buy FRP?
Is this the material that is also called Masonite?

chris_harper2 Sep 05, 2004 09:52 AM

I have seen FRP board at just about any Lowes, Home Depot, Menard's when I've looked for it.

It is different from Masonite.

I checked Home Depot...and found this stuff, but only one style.
White with bumps on it. Does it come in any other color or style?
I am going to line my entire cage with this stuff.
I would love to be able to do that with a black panel.

I would guess yes. In today's day and age you could probably get it in technicolor. You just have to find where the market is on what your looking for. Find out who makes it and contact the company. I'll bet someone in Beverly Hills has it in Hot Pink!

Good luck!

I have seen it in a cream color and an almond color.

You might try painting a sample of it with the new Krylon Plastic Paint. The soak it, scrub it, and try different disinfectants on it.

If you're really stuck on black and don't have the time to do the tests then expanded PVC comes in black.

I was going to suggest vinyl flooring but the stuff mentioned above should be very scratch/puncture resistant as well where vinyl may not.
