WTFs changing colors?

twee Sep 05, 2004 07:08 AM

My normally jade WTF changed colors to grey last night. I was reading so there was enough light to watch him, but not enough to disturm him. I had just put crickets in and he had finished them all he was sitting on a leaf, grey. I know they sometimes change colors due to stress, but why else?

Temperature and lighting can also have effect...I notice at night or in the dark my whites will change a bit of a darker color than during the day. One reason is I believe that at night it's a lot easier to spot a brighter colored animal if you're a predator, so it could be used as camoflage which is obviously the one of the original reasons frogs are able to change their color. If it's colder I also noticed that 2 of my frogs change color so that could also be a contributing factor. One of my frogs is usually always brown, and only turns a jade green when he is in the light and gets really warm. When one of mine turns brown she almost looks completely white because she's a really light lime green. The other two are the blue phase ones and one stays a bluish green and the other usually has a blue body with brown legs, so I have a variety of them. I will post a picture of the color variations I have in my frogs after this post.

Here are my four frogs, Cadi is at the very top being the biggest one, Bentley is the smaller of the four on the right, Beamer is the third one from the top resting his bum on top of Audi. Cadi is light lime green and changes to a light brown, Bentley is the bluish green changing to a dark brown, Beamer is also a bluish green, but changes more bluish than Bentley and as you can see is that dark brown, and then Audi is inbetween changing from jade green and olive brown.

Cute picture. Thanks a lot. I think it must be the light, because it only fets to 74 degrees in my house at night. Your lucky to have all of those. Mine has the sweetest personality.

Sorry, one more thing, how do you keep the humidity up in those mesh cages your useing, Babybluefrogs? I was thinking about one of those, but the person at the pet store said they didnt keep humidity up well enough...

you can cover parts of the outside w/ plastic wrap, and spray often, but whites don't need that high of humidity, anywhere from 50-60%.

I keep all live plants in mine and spray it once or twice a day which keeps the humidity up, I also use the expandable dirt which is always kept moist helping with humidity as long as there's a source of heat or light. At night I set a space heater by the cage and keep the heat on low just to help radiate a little more heat into the cage--I also hang a blanket over the top of the cage which covers all sides but one instead of leaving the cage sit wide open. Because with the reptariums, you can't really put any of those plastic picture backgrounds on to cover the sides so the blanket does fine and once again helps with the heat and humidity. I also thought about that when the cage was bought but so far everything has been great. In fact, I almost find it better than my glass aquarium where I was always afraid the humidity would get to be too much without as much circulation. I'm definitely fond of this new cage very much and the frogs love it. They don't try to escape from this one!
