My crickets are dead!!

gothra Sep 05, 2004 10:38 AM

I just came home and found that at least half of all my crickets are on their back; the other half seems fine. I think they got toxicated by the greens that I gave them this morning, but I've already washed and soaked the greens for 2 hrs to make sure all chemicals are gone, so maybe one leaf was really saturated with chemicals and the 2 hrs soak is just not enough? I know I need to throw them away, but the problem is, I'd also fed my mealworm and superworm colony the same stuff, none of them died. Do you think they are safe to feed my leos after a few days of "diluting" with other fruits and veges?

I have never heard of any adverse effects from any type of greens. I know that crickets produce quite a bit of ammonia, so if ventilation is bad they can suffocate pretty quickly.

I went to throw them out this morning, more crickets are on their back, however they are NOT dead! They can still kick their legs when touched (including the ones I thought dead last night), so I am guessing its some kind of chemical that made them unable to "stand up".

Do you have a no pest strip or any other type of insect killer in the room?
I had a no pest strip in the room and wondered the same thing.

It's very possible you just got a bad batch of crickets.
