Is this normal toad behavior?

Cathy Sep 05, 2004 02:56 PM

Last winter I rescued a toad from a backhoe (long story!). Just a common sort, looks like a western Woodhouse. I had planned to let him go this spring when it rained and other toads were out and about. But it didn't rain so...

He's in a 5-gallon aquarium in the same bathroom as my tiger sal. (Separate facilities, though; the tiger has delusions of grandeur and would probably choke to death trying to eat him.)

He burrows down in the Jungle Mix and I never see him. Every few weeks I wonder if he's died, so I haul him out. He has a water dish and a log hide above ground, but he just goes to the bottom.
The Jungle Mix is about 3 inches deep, so he can bury himself completely.
Should I take out some of the dirt so he can't bury down so far?
Should I continue to "wake him up" every so often, or just assume he will come out if/when he's hungry? How long can a toad go without eating?

Also, he will eat crickets, but will not touch worms. No matter how big, small, fat, thin or wriggly. Just sits and stares at them and looks disgusted. (OK, he always looks disgusted!)

Only thing I can think is that our soil in West Texas is so sandy and we have so few worms that the toads have adapted to eating insects to the point that worms are not, to him, natural. Does this make any sense?

Any advice or insight anyone can give will be appreciated.

thats common. toads are nocturnal. hes probably up and about when your asleep. just to make sure you should mist the cage everday or so to keep it moist so he doesnt get dehydrated. you can continue to wake him up every so often to make sure hes alive.
