I had Gomez out of his cage for the first time today...

Chameleon996 Sep 05, 2004 03:31 PM

He has been on my front porch for the past week because his cage would not fit through my door. I had to take him out so my dad and hubby could cut the cage in half. I think I handled him pretty well considering up until now the biggest lizard I have ever held was a beardie.

I decided to put him in the bathroom until they were done with the cage. Once I got him indoors he was pretty easy to handle I just held his tail and he walked, luckily in the direction of the bathroom. I did get a few scratches in before I got him inside, but I was actually expecting worse. I put him in the bathtub and removed everything that I thought he could possible get into. I put the shower curtains clear up on top of the bar and removed pretty much everything that wasn't bolted down.

Can I cut his toenails? His cage is made with 1/4 inch chicken wire and when he climbs it his toenails stick out and I figured I could cut them easily this way. I may not get them all done at one time but anything would help.

The chicken wire is a BAD idea (unless you are talking about what is called hardware cloth or in the south "rabbit wire"!!! It has sharp edges that can and will eventually cut off a toe in the process of him adding weight. Any wire used should be plastic coatred so as not to hurt their feet or claws.
