I want one! What should I get?

JohnnyToad Sep 05, 2004 03:48 PM

Hi,
My name is John. I mlive in New York City with my wife and I have fallen in love with Frogs and Toads. I want one! I wonder which one is the best to get. I have looked at Fire Bellied Toads and Chubby frogs. Those are the most accessable to me. I need some advice! Is there anywhere to buy these little guys online? Is there a good place to buy supplies online? me and my wife are both to the point where we can't wait. Please help?

Thank You

John

Welcome to the wonderful world of frogging:D!

Both firebellied toads, and chubby frogs are excellent begginers, myself preferring the firebellies.

Another excellent frog is the green treefrog!

All of these frog species can be found for under $10$.

If you check the classifieds section you will find some species being sold, and you can check some sites such as BlackJungle.com for supplies.

I recommend the Fire-bellies, then the green tree frogs if you don't plan on handling them much otherwise you should consider the White's Tree frog (very docile and doesn't mind handling). Green tree frogs tend to jump a lot as do the firebellies (albiet not as far), but the Whites are very calm. All of the above will eat crickets, at my fish and reptile store here in California our prices are Firebellies:$8 Green Tree Frogs:$7 and Whites:$20 or so.

Best of luck and may I suggest buying a general care book when you purchase the pet? They can be very useful.

First of all thank you very much for your words. Both of you have been very helpful. Just so you know I have already bought a general care book that covers all of the areas of care from housing, to feeding to breeding.

Thank You

John

Sunday, September 12, the reptile expo is going to be in white plains New York. There are many breeders there and many different frogs will be accessible to you. Though beginner frogs like firebelly toad, white's tree frog, and pac-man are probably best you would probably have a better selection there.

They are no like snakes, lizards, etc. Frogs should be display animals and should not be held for your enjoyment. What is the difference between holding a green tree frog and a whites? Both will get stressed. Bottom line is frogs should only be handled when absolutely necessary.

i agree w/ snakeguy frogs and toads are not to be held unless necessary.
that being said.. i would go with the fire belly toad. it was my first about 12 years ago. i have two now, one japanese FBT-houdini and one european FBT-scat( along with a chubby frog-buddha, fowlers toad-bilbo, red eyed tree frog-gumby, green tree frog, 2 gargoyle geckos,a broad head skink.
the pet stores will say its ok to mix different species, but its not. they have different needs and could eat eachother.
for the FBT i have a ten gallon and i got a 9 and 3/4 wide piece of glass cut to silicone or hot glue in the tank to make a barrier for the land. it was like 2 $ at lowes. i had a small piece of vinyl tubing i slit down the center lengthwise and hot glued on the top of the cut glass so they wouldnt get cut. it worked great. in the tank there is a small in tank filter i got at walmart for 10 $ it makes a little waterfall. and most importantly get a lid . even tho FBT cant jump real high they can dry out partially and get really sticky and climb out the top. welcome to this wonderful hobby and happy frogging
