crested gecko baby help, again

maclen Sep 05, 2004 05:40 PM

okay, got some pinhead crickets and it still hasn't gone after anything. i think i might have remembered what could be the cause for all of this though, when i first got it i put a lil lobster roach in the cage with it and it lunged after the roach. for those of you who own lobster roaches you know they secrete that smelly stuff when threatened, well i think the CG might have gotten a taste of this and been discouraged and lost its appetite. what should i do??? it has been 10 days and i havent noticed it eat one thing yet!!!

You can mix some calcium in with your baby food and try hand feeding (or just leave it in a shallow dish).... also, how old is your crested, pin heads may be much too small.

its about a month and a half old, only about 2 inches from head to tail. it won't let me rub baby food on its snout, it does its little scream and runs around franticly when i try. i left some in a bowl one time and i didnt notice any of it eaten, and thats the whole problem, i never see it eat. i know it isnt eating the roaches/crix, but i am not sure about the cgd or baby food. thanks

i am having the same problem with my new three month olds. They were eating crickets in the shop but since i have them they've only eaten one each (the first day). this is what i've done since. peach and pear etc baby food with calcium and vit supplements mixed. Like you said, dip the nose in it and wait. pretty soon it will lick off the stuff on its snout. have the rest of the babyfood at the ready. when it starts to lick get that food against its mouth as fast as you can so while its still licking its snout clean its tongue is suddenly in the rest of the food. the little guy will keep on licking until its had its fill. be prepared to raise it a little as my two always seem to tilt their heads back so gravity can get it down their throats (at least that why i think they do it). i do this every night and it always works. i just wish i knew how to get them to eat the crickets. i have a box full of very bored crickets now and nothing to do with them. i will have to get some crested gecko diet now and supplement it with meat based babyfood. i just hope that when they get bigger and a little more sure of themselves they'll start to show those crickets whose boss.
hope this helps.
Brian

it's been nearly 10 days and the lil guy still isnt taking any live food!!! i am positive that he is scared to eat because of the nasty secretion from the lobster roaches, since before me he only ate crickets. so how and when should i start force feeding, or is there something better i can do. and ive already tried rubbing baby food on its snout

Do you see any ''gecko poops''? I am assuming you have him in a small enough cage that you can monitor him.If hes going to the bathroom then he has to be eating.
At 1 1/2 months none of my babies were still screaming ,I think you may be stressing him/her out with your concerns.
Put him in a small cage with something nice to climb and hide on like egg carton .Keep the cage in a quiet part of the house. Dont pick him up unless you have too. Keep some tasty babyfood with a lil calcium in the cage (Placed at night so its fresh when he is most active.)
Once he calms down put ONE or TWO pinheads in .Often times it takes awhile for them to decide moving targets are food. One of mine didnt touch crickets for two weeks ,then suddenly couldnt get enough of them.
I have never heard of anyone needing to force feed a crested ,as small as they are I cant imagine it being done without injuring them badly. I really think thats a bad idea unless you know a expert at such matters.

i have seen maybe 3 lil poops since i got him about about 10 days ago. he is in a pretty quiet part of the house(my room) i dont play music too loud or anything. i did notice that it ate some baby food tonight though that i put out, but i havent noticed it eat any CGD. is it okay to give them baby food as a staple part of the diet, because i thought it was just supposed to be a twice a week treat sort of thing.

Mix the CGD with the baby food, and gradually increase the amount.

I agree with the previous posts i can't get my leo to eat its baby food meanwhile it will go nuts and never stop eating insects. Perhaps your cage is a bit too big and its hard/stressful for him to hunt?
good lcuk

If he is pooping hes eating.
If youve seen him eating a little hes eating enough ..reptiles dont starve themselves unless they are already so sick they cant eat.So basically stop worrying that he isnt eating.
In answer to your other question.. no you shouldnt feed a diet of babyfood. Cresteds are not crazy over Crested Gecko Diet wether its good for them or not.If your feeding them straight babyfood a few times a week they will skip a day of crested gecko diet and wait until you provide babyfood again. In essense he is training you.
Probally the best solution is put a slight amount of Crested gecko diet into your babyfood and gradullay increase the dosage of creted gecko diet in the babyfood.
