Just trying to figure out why alot of people are so afraid of yellow rat morphs--NOT bubblegums, lol

Jeff Schofield Sep 05, 2004 09:18 PM

I had to sternly defend my yellow ratsnake line on another forum recently and figured I would again open a line of communication here to dispell rumors of cross-breedings.....I have done my homework when purchasing this project and cant understand all the apprehension. It is about time SOMEONE has started to produce NICE yellow rats dont you think?? Dwight has some I know, but noone else I have come across keeps them.Reasons???Jeff

I keep Yellow Rats, and they are great looking snakes. Mine came from Terry Parks. You will have to ask him where his stock came from. How about some better photos so that we can better see what they look like. Hard to tell from that photo. Yelows are another great Elaphe obsoleta.

I had one for awhile but it developed a tumor and died. It was a great looking snake and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Obsoleta are just plain grand. The only reason I don't have one now is that I've grown to prefer beautiful examples of the natural look.

With recessive genes INCLUDED? I would suggest that there is little market for "naturals"because noone has put the time/energy into refining a nice line of them....And to me it makes the most sense in doing this WITH genetic abbarancies because of the options they present. And lets face it,"normals"are a little "cheap"and can be difficult to move as hatchlings prior to ontonogenesis(sp?).I KNOW I need to get some better pics of these rats I have out there and let people really see them.Soon, thanks for the reply,Jeff

jeff, i personally don't care for them because they just look pale to me. i like the 'normal locality look' much better as they have more color going for them. i noticed this 'drain' of color trend in some of the other subs as well and frankly, just don't get it!? imho naturally ;>]............

I really like all the Elaphe Obsoleta, but I too like them in their "natural" colorations. However, I would prefer to have a high end specimen of the natural colortion. Especially when it comes to the glades, yellows, and Deckerts. If someone were to start producing some very nice looking yellows and glades that were from some nice looking parents, I believe you would be able to sell them off fairly quick.

I know Dwight has produced some very nice looking yellows and glades in the past, I have one of each!! LOL

The glades

And the yellow

First I have a question.
Are these Yellow Rat Snakes (quadrivittata) or yellow phase black rats?
Either way they are pretty nice looking snakes.
I too would like to see better pictures.
Now, I actually lean more towards corn snakes then rat snakes
(and I don't want to get into the boring old argument of them being the same thing..they aren't)and had originally only planed on adding a pair of Bairds rat snakes to my corn collection.
Then I ended up receiving a yellow rat snake (quadrivittata) and a couple of everglades as rescues.
I love yellows in rat snakes and corn snakes and if I was to branch more heavily into rat snakes I would definitely get a mate for my Yellow rat and would probably lean towards the albino obsoletas with the most yellow in them.
Like the lemon cowsuckers that were pictured not too long ago.
so, in short.. I like yellow rat snakes!!!

Corn snakes and rat snakes..No one can have just one.

If I could find a yellow rat colored like the citron yellow looking one from the National Audobahn Society book, I'd be ALL over them. It reminds me of GatorGum. My very first snake was a yellow rat. However, Im not real impressed by most of the normals out in the market right now that are the brown and black color. Im sure there's just as much possibility with variations though, so who knows what can be made, especially if someone wanted to start crossing albino versions into other species, like Emorys or something.

Just a quick thought..........
