Sort of an okay herping outing (pics)

Well, if I figured this pic thing out correctly you should see three pics below. The first is a sub-adult cottonmouth probably 18 inches long, the second two are of some tiny little snake I found when I was flipping over some bark in some dense cover. It's not the best pic out there but maybe you can help me ID it. It was about as thick as a pencil and maybe 10 inches long. I kind of have a hunch that it was a common garter hatchling but what do I know, I'm still new to herping.

The little snakes you found are Texas Brown snakes, Storeia dekayi texana. Very common. It appears to me you are looking in lowland areas, hence the cottonmouth. Look in areas with some elevation and illegal dumping. There you will find more than a lifetime worth of Texas Ratsnakes and possibly find some intergraded Kings, Atrox, and Great Plains Rats (E.g.emoryi).
Tarantulas and scorpions are common as well....so watch your fingers when flipping trash.
