Black rats are on the move...

lbrat Jun 25, 2003 05:16 PM

After a cool and rainy week last week, the black rats are moving good here in north central Pa.
Sunday my freind caught a nice black phase timber at his cabin.Monday a freind of mine who works for a pest control company brought a 4' black rat to where I work and gave it to me(his company instructs them to kill everything!)It even ate a road kill chipmonk in the bucket he was in, with 10 people watching over him!Tuesday another freind of mine caught two 5' black rats at his house,a 1.1 pair within 10 minutes. He wanted to keep one,so he took the male and I brought the female home to see if my long term captive male would breed her. After a whole 5 minutes in his enclosure,he was all over her and hooked right up!I figure the male he had kept was actually trailing that female since he was found in the same place as the female 10 minutes later.
My amel. female will drop eggs within the next week.Could anyone tell me, if I keep the wild caught female till she drops her eggs, incubate, hatch them, would the young survive if released in the woodlot behind my house?I have heard conflicting answers to that question before.

On releasing the kids..
They'd be much better off released near permanent water. Look for a local creek or pond. Somewhere far from a heavily travelled road would even be better. The perfect spot would also have mixed meadow/forest.
