venomous permit in NY

wayne13114 Sep 06, 2004 07:57 AM

I've been keeping non venmomous snakes for about 15 years. I would like to obtain a venomous permit sometime in the future, and was wondering if anyone in central NY could help me out, I could assist cage cleanings, feeding, whatever needs to be done, I'm in oswego county. I'm mainly interested in native venomous species of NY, thanks to anyone who replies

before obtaining your VRI. I live in Cayuga County, but since I only have one hot left ( a dusky pygmy ), I wouldn't be much help. You're going about it the same way I did before I got my permit, I was lucky enough to have someone ( although 200 or so miles away ) to teach me how to handle with his snakes. Hopefully, someone will do the same for you. As far as obtaining the permit, all you have to do is contact the DEC's special license unit and have them send you an application. Be honest on the ap and make sure that you don't have any city ordinance's, if you live in Oswego, you may. I ran into that problem at one point, so it forced me to get rid of most of my snakes until I found an alternative. If you have any problems, you can e-mail me privately, and please, if you haven't already, sign the NYS petition for the ban of reptiles.
Good luck.

Timber rattlesnakes and massasaugas require an Endangered Species permit, which is a whole new ball game in terms of getting.

Do as Tom said, and email him with questions
