Komodo pics...

DMexotics Sep 06, 2004 09:40 AM

I just got back from a trip to Southeast Asia. I spent 8 days on a live-aboard dive boat to Komodo. I have wanted to see the dragons since I was a little boy and have finally checked that one off of my life-long "to-do" list. Now it is on my "re-do" list. The diving was incredible, the dragons were unbelievable. Enjoy...

How lucky you are to have travled there...great pics too.. I someday wish to travel to there, along with other areas in indo/southeast asia..

Which Island/s did you travel to? or did you just visit Komodo..? how about padar, rinca, or flores?

I've got Oz, and Indo on my top two places to visit in the future... Did you experience any problems/complications out there, whether it be illness/customs/anti-american resentment?

Anyways, great pics, and thanks for showing them with us...

cheers,

bob

In regards to other islands, we flew into and out of Bima so you could say we visited it sort of. I did some dragon stuff on Rinca and we dove around Padar, Rinca and Komodo. Basically everything revolved around diving as we did 20 dives in 8 days, some days getting in 4 dives.

I had no problems at all. I stand out so there is always a barrage of stares, questions and comments(Smackdown, Rambo, Arnold, Bodyguard, etc.). In every country, they quickly figured out that I eat a ton so my plates started coming in triple and quadruple portions(with an audience, LOL). I didn't come across many Americans and most thought I was Australian. Don't worry, I left a good, lasting impression...and the big guy, he was an American, LOL. I seem to be returning to Asia every year now so I will probably include Indo again next year with maybe a Thai live-aboard to the Similans.

What organization or group did you go with (website would be great) and the approximate cost from the US???

Thanks

If you're not a diver, don't waste the money on a live-aboard dive boat. You can fly to Labuan Bajo from Bali and take a day trip to Komodo. The dive operator I went with was divekomodo.com, it is ran by two brothers(Australians) and they have worked extensively with the park service and TNC so they are quite well-known and connected to the park. Tell Greg I(Dan Mulleary) referred you. The whole trip cost me a ton but I was gone for 3 weeks and went to 4 different countries. I think you could pull off a dive trip from LAX to Bali/Komodo and back for about 3K. Cheaper for just a land version I would imagine and a day trip shouldn't cost you much at all.

Cool pics and a nice trip. I did Komodo, Flores, Rinca on a 50 foot boat with my wife for 4 days. Everything was included (from Labuanbajo)and it cost $150. This was just sightseeing and din't include a dive package, although because we rented the boat, they let us pick where we wanted to go, so we did some diving. Diving around Komodo and Rinca were better than most places I've been, including the Great Barrier, Micronesia, and the West Indies. When arranged in-country, trips can be very cheap. We also did inland Flores and Bali and I would recommend that as well. Of course they all thought I was some giant freak too, but they were very friendly.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
