Paralysis in Drymarchon

D Goudie Sep 06, 2004 10:51 AM

Hi Guys;

? for everyone, my friend has a Cribo thats acting a little weird. It eats OK, & moves around alright BUT there is about a 8 inch section above it's cloaca where he claims it feels as limp as a noodle. Apparently you can just pick it up by that section & it just falls over.... But What's REALLY weird is that it still has muscle tone in it's tail because when he holds it's tail the snake can wrap it's tail between his fingers. I myself would guess some sort of paralysis, but I myself have NOT seen this OR heard of this thing before so I am bringing this dilemma to you 'Tribal Elders'... Dean? Doug? Fred? Oldherper?? ANYBODY??? So far I've told him to handle the snake as little as possible & there's NO way I'm gonna go look at it based on all the talks of Crypto & every other ailement thats being discussed in here these days. Last thing I need is to bring some weird bug home to my gang. Has anyone seen anything like this before?? To the best of his knowledge it has not sustained any recent injuries.

Look forward to your replies.

Dean

Hey Dean,

Not that I'm gonna have any answers, but I 'm curious about this.

How long has the snake had this ailment? If it's always had the problem, it could be genetic or early trauma that caused it. If the problem is recent and your friend doesn't remember dropping something on him, or handling him too roughly, I think you're right in avoiding the critter.

If you do go to see the snake, make sure that as a precaution you strip all your clothes off outside (scary visual), have someone spray you down with Chlorhexidine and burn your clothes, including your shoes... or maybe just wash your hands.

Hope it does ok.

I was thinking of stripping buck naked outside THEN swimming through 1 of those parasite baths they run sheep through out in Austraila before setting them loose in the outback...... sound about right???
