conodor Sep 06, 2004 10:58 AM

I'm looking for a snake, but really don't know what type would be best for me. any help would be great!

Non-venum, about 4 foot max. size, not very aggresive(don't want him biting me!haha) really about the most important parts.

never had a snake and want to do some research first. i have lizards and ready to get a snake now.

Thanks for any help!

Same as my reply above. Take a look at house snakes and rosy boas.

Look into:

Cornsnakes
Mexican Black Kingsnakes
Rosy boas
Sand boas (hide a lot)
Spotted Pythons

corn snakes seem to be the best all around first snake. And the one most recomended. Next i would recomend one of the more common kingsnakes.

Ball pythons seem to be popular beginer snakes. I've heard people advise against them because feeding can be a problem at times. I've never had a single problem with any mine though. May also take up a little more room than you're looking for.

Generaly very easy going. good feeders. Not overly aggressive as some other varieties of kings sometimes are.Somewhat personable in a low key kind of way.In my opinion/experience some individuals are calmer than some corn snakes.I think an ideal "pet" snake if thats what your looking for.Just my opinion.

Good luck. Bob.

i completely agree with whoever said ball pythons. i started with a pair and now have many. as long as you've got the internet and some good reference books you'll be fine. Also i suggest getting in touch with a good reptile dealer because they'll usually guarantee your snakes and give you a number you can call with questions anytime. but as for a good "pet" snake ball pythons are by far my favorite as they almost never bite, usually eat well even on frozen if they're captive bred, and don't grow very large. good luck with whatever you choose but take a look at my site because i'm pretty new here and i do just fine with advice from my dealer (who's site is linked to mine) and common sense.
