substrate question?????

angusowner Sep 06, 2004 12:06 PM

i have an 8 in. redfoot and i was wondering what substrates can be used as opposed to my topsoil and cypress mulch mix, because his water dish ends up looking atrocious after just a few hours and keeping the 15 square ft. enclosure humid seems to attract mold and harmeless basement insects. thank you for any input. -dave

just a thought but i used to use tree bark for my box turtles. that was when they were still in side it seemed to leave their water dish relitively clean and they seemed to like it and it also retained alot of humidity. hope that helps

I find it interesting that you would mix topsoil in with cypress.. is there a particular reason for the mix? Just curious.

In my outside "humid (place to) hide" there is a good 4"-6" of cypress for them to sleep on.. no dirt.. and they all like it very saturated with water. Remove the dirt??

You gotta love 'em!

It's kind of an evolutionary thing.
The forces that be don't think that you should use sand or soil but a sand and soil mix is ok.

Well I guess if you take away the sand and add cypress that would have to be better.

That's what I call over thinking a simple problem.
