Mites, Mites, Mites and their eradication...

KoenigsPythons Jun 25, 2003 05:48 PM

I was wondering everyone's opinion/views on the different types of mite killers/preventers. I personally have used Black Knight and have had success with it but I was wondering what else everyone has had SUCCESS with. I know there is Provent-A-Mite and I've also heard of using Nix mixed with distilled water.

Please tell me what you recommend or what you have had the best success with in killing and proventing mites.

Thanks

As far as I can tell, all three things you mentioned have the same active ingredient. I've used just provent a mite so far and it works like a charm.

I use a .1% Ivermectin solution in a spray bottle.

I'd imagine you do, and I also wonder if my vet would get it for me.
Well, it's not like anyone has mites at the moment (knock on wood)...

It's supposed to be prescription. You can mix your own from Ivermectin paste for cattle. It's really extra-label use, but I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for it. Your vet can mix it up for you too..

I have heard using diluted Nix with a combination of a 10:1 water:bleach in the enclosure helps. Anyone tried this but heard it works well? I never had mites *knock on wood* so I dont know.

I've had mites only twice, five years apart . . . one in garter snakes, the other in a rat snake. I used mineral oil on the snakes both times once a week for three weeks and cleaned the cages with a chlorox dilution. Worked both times.

I did that for my first snake (a king) and it did work. Pretty time consuming, though, and if I'd had any other snakes, I would have felt the need to do it for everyone.

If you are still looking for mite information, I have ahd mites on my lizard. If you notice them right away its easier to deal with. You can get a vet to inject ivermectin which will kill them. You can also give the animal a bath for a little while which will drown the mites and kill them without hurting the animal. You can also put vaseline or petroleum jelly over the mites which will suffocate them and make them fall off. With my lizard, I got the ivermectin injection, it worked with only one injection but can kill the animal if its not dosed properly.
Just thought id reply in case anyone wanted to know
