Mites on Rats...

KoenigsPythons Jun 25, 2003 05:51 PM

Just wondering if there was any good way to kill any mites on a rat. I think two of my newly acquired rats have mites and I would like to keep the rats alive (without freezing them) so they can breed but I need to kill those mites. I have Black Knight and was wondering if anyone has ever used it before on rats or rodents. I have read the can and it doesn't say anything about rodents. I know not to spray them directly but I was wondering if spraying there enclosure and surroundings, if that would help??

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I use Ovitrol Plus....it is from a vet though and that may not be practical for you. I happen to have some for fleas on kittens I was fostering and it was highly recommended by my vet for use on small animals...ie, my rats.
Rats are very sensitive to anything inhaled and I personally wouldn't use Black Knight. Though I don't know what is in it.
I would get something that is just basic puppy and kitten flea spray, 0.18% pyrethrin and not something that is stronger or different. Spray them down, away from their face. Rub it in and spray in and around their cage lightly. Week or two later do it again.
