Hibernation Question

indy1 Sep 06, 2004 04:36 PM

Ok, I have set my box turtle up in a large plastic swimming pool on the East side of my house. She has a shallow large dish full of water for soaking in and a small shallow dish for food. She has a large hollow log to climb on and hide under. She loves to hide under this log. I had a box for her to hide under but once I put the log in she prefered to hide under it. The wood chips I have are supposed to be good for her to dig in and plants to grown in. At least that's what they said; I bought them at Pet.Co.

My question is,,, I live in South East Louisiana and was wondering what I should do with her in the winter? Should I just leave her outside or should I bring her inside? I know they hibernate when it's cold but how do I know if she's ok while she's hibernating? Also, is it ok for her to hibernate outside here? It gets as low as the low 30's and sometimes the low 20'2 here.

I realy like this turlte and I want to make her life as normal as possible. Any help would be appreciated.

Steph

Ok, I am a little confused. I looked up several pictures of box turltes when I purchaed mine because the person I puchased her from did'nt seem to know anything about turtles. I believed mine to be an Eastern Box Turtle box but, someone who posted recetly said their's was an Ornate Box Turtle and mine looks exactely like thiers. So, now I'm confused. I don't have any pictures of mine but how do I tell if she's an Eastern Box Turtle or an Ornate Box Turtle?

Thanks for the pictures. Mine definately looks more like the ornate turtle in your pictures.
