scaredy snake

SittonJ Sep 06, 2004 07:26 PM

My 1 year old oketee corn always turns tail and runs to hide whenever I enter the room. I thought that with handling and as he grew older, he would start hanging out in his cage and not hiding everytime I entered. Was I wrong? Is there anything I can do to make him less afraid of my movements?

Have you had him the full year? How often do you handle him? Is he in a clear tank? It is true he will calm down with time but if you have him in a clear glass tank he can't see you..they have very poor long distance sight. He just sees something big coming for him and he's still in that phase of his life where everything is trying to eat him. I'm honestly not too sure when he'll outgrow that, but the more you handle him the more safe he'll feel in your hands. You have probably noticed from the first time you handled him to how it is now...mine used to run from me but now they just let me pick them up with no problem. If you get close enough and he recognizes you from that standpoint he may stick out to see if you're going to feed him, but mine are the same way as in always hiding. I TRY to take mine out 2-3 times a day for 15 mins at a time (the yearlings). Good luck.

I think some snakes just have their own personality, and I'm not sure they change much. I have a baby cornsnake that is NEVER in it's hide, and I'm sure he thinks he's a tree python or something! It sleeps on the highest branch in his cage and never runs from me. It's a cool snake. From what I hear, corns do like to climb though. I think they feel safer the higher they are. Do you have something in your cage for your snake to climb? Here is a picture of my setup. My snake loves it.

I have 4 baby corns when i first got them they hide too, then when i go to transfer them to another container to feed, i take that opportunity to hold them as it might be the last before a shed, so i spend time holding and talking, then placing them in the container to feed, at which point i also watch them eat and me being big hanging over them at that time, it's either food or being scared. I find that combo of things helps and 3 out of 4 don't hide anymore andf just cruise in the tank.
I have a BCI and she hisses unless i hold her for long periods of time at which she calms right down.
