retained eye caps

pezpunk Sep 06, 2004 10:07 PM

i was just wondering how to tell if my dumeril's has retained her eye caps, should it be relatively easy/obvious what should it look like? i can never tell can usually only one comes clean with the shed and the other is hard to find in her cage. also i have a hard time keeping the humidity up in the tank. its a 55 gallon breeders tank (i think thats the size) and has a mesh like lid and i use repti bark for substrate with a heating pad under one end of the tank, any suggestions?

I run a Repti-Flo 250 pump(about$14.@PetsMart) in my 75 display and my screen tops are duct taped off except for about 3" across the back edge for ventalation.Without seeing the snake theres no way to tell on the eye-cap issue ?It will look like theres a clear scale covering a portion of the eye. Low humidity will also cause dents in the eye, soaking will remove those dents as well as retained eye caps.
Do not use the tape trick for removing eye caps as some people have done in the past. Just soak the snake for about 30 min and allow it to crawl thru a soft towel, second option would be to use cooking oil on a Qtip to coat the eyes for acouple days it wont hurt the snake in any way.

ok she looked like she had a dent in the eye, is that a retained eye cap or something else? i put her in a pillow case with a warm wet towel for an hour or so and she seems to be fine now.

Sounds more like dehydration to me. Up the humidity!! Try misting it daily. What are you using to measure temps and humidity levels? Where is it located in the cage? Just above the substrate? Or further up the side of the cage? Devices used for measureing temps and humidity need to be just above the substrate at the snakes level.
